Amtrak FEC Service Update

The draft application for a federal grant to extend Amtrak service on the Florida East Coast Railway is essentially complete.  There is an "Agreement in Principle" between Amtrak and FDOT, though the liability provisions are still being negotiated.  There will be two round-trips per day for the eight planned cities and the station locations have all been determined. Matching funds of 33% have been secured which is above the 20% minimum required from state and local governments for the federal grant application.  In a recent development, FDOT and Amtrak have left open a possibility to expand service to other communities in future phases.

FCRP needs to shift into high gear on the Sunset issue. There will be a meeting toward the end of October in NewOrleans on the subject. It will probably be the same weekend that I am in Nashville for my 50th college reunion, but maybe someone will go. I would like to see Jacksonville be the termination point for an east-west service and to me it makes sense because any shuffling of equipment for trains on the FEC will require mechanical personnel to be on hand. Also if an east-west schedule could be worked out that would provide a short connection time to go further west or north in NewOrleans, and also to go north or south in Jacksonville, it ought to really jump start ridership on all involved trains.
