On Wednesday morning this week, train 91 will have an extra loco to be cut off in Jax. FL.

Then Amtrak Train 97 will have an extra loco plus Amtrak President Boardman's train consisting of a sleeper, a dome car and the "Beech Grove" inspection car to be cut off in Jax. Re: Special Amtrak train on FEC

For the Amtrak/Florida East Coast special, engine number trivia:

Original assignment was AMTK 1, added to Train 97(26) for the trip to Jacksonville; and AMTK 19, added to Train 91(27).

But AMTK 19 broke down on the way south. AMTK 67 off Train 91(27) will substitute (hopefully it will get washed), and Train 91 will have to run to Miami on one functioning unit and one dead one.

Any breakdown is bad, but it's fortunate that the AMTK 19 went into STATE OF GOOD REPAIR before it was entrusted to hauling a train of dignitaries, politicos and business leaders!

The office car 10001 "Beech Grove", dome 10031 and a Viewliner departed Washington on Train 97(27). The three Amfleet II coaches being added for Thursday's VIP run are already at Hialeah.

With Amtrak CEO boardman's announcement that cuts may be forthcoming, I'm not going to hold my breath over startup of service down the FEC. On the contrary, I wonder if my planned Christmas trip on the Silver Star may be the last on a train serving Tampa.

Ridership at Tampa is skyrocketing. Last month, it surpassed Orlando to become the busiest station in Florida (it even outstrips all of the stations in Georgia, including Atlanta).

The current Amtrak administration is aware of what they have, too. That wasn't always the case in the past.

I don't pretend to know what we will see in Florida 18 months from now if the budget cuts come, but I would be floored if Amtrak were to pull service from Tampa or Lakeland.

With that said, I am very concerned about what the politicians will do to Amtrak and passenger rail when a new Congress and (perhaps a new) President take over in 2013. We all need to talk about the importance of passenger rail to our elected officials.
